Calculating burn rate sport

This manual is intended to provide general information about the burn rate that is used in sport and activities in MyCalorieCoach.

Basic metabolic rate

The body needs energy for vital processes like breathing and maintaining body temperature. In addition, maintaining the body also costs energy, for instance healing wounds and growing hair and nails. Together, this energy is called the basic metabolic rate. In addition to this, energy is also required for physical activities like sport, fitness, walking, riding a bicycle, swimming, etc.

Burn rate

The burn rate is a number that indicates how many calories people on average use per kilogram body weight per hour when they exercise. The burn rate times the body weight yields the required amount of energy per hour (kilocalories per hour). If you convert this to minutes you can calculate how many calories you burn during a physical activity like walking or swimming.

Calculating the use of calories is an accurate approach. An accurate measurement can be made using a sports watch (for instance a Polar) which measures the heart rate. With MyCalorieCoach it is possible to use both methods. People who do not have a (Polar) sports watch can have their energy use in kilocalories per hour calculated with the burn rate. People who have a (Polar) sports watch can simply enter the values directly into the software. When you train or work out in a fitness club or gym, you can copy the values of the fitness equipment into MyCalorieCoach.

Example

Regular walking has a burn rate of about 3.5 KCal per kilo per hour. If a person weighing 60 kilos walks regularly for an hour, he uses 3.5 x 60 kilos x 1 hour = 210 Kcal. A person weighing 80 kilos uses more energy than a person weighing 60 kilos: 3.5 x 80 kilos x 1 hour = 280 Kcal. The MyCalorieCoach software calculates these values automatically for you.
