This manual is intended to provide general information about the energy and calorie requirements that can be used in the software program MyCalorieCoach.
The body needs energy for all our vital processes, like breathing and maintaining body temperature. In addition, maintaining the body also costs energy, for instance healing wounds and growing hair and nails. Energy is expressed in calories or in joules. Together we call this the basic metabolic rate or BMR. In addition to the BMR we also need energy to walk, think, ride a bicycle, swim, etc. In other words, your daily energy requirement is the BMR plus the energy you need to carry out your daily activities.
When adding a new day, you will always see the screen with the daily settings. The energy requirement (based on the basic metabolic rate) can be modified in the second tab on the daily settings screen. On this screen, the program calculates how many calories you more or less require on a normal day.
To calculate the energy requirement, MyCalorieCoach uses the Harris Benedict formula. The Harris Benedict takes into account your gender, weight, height and age. Your basic metabolic rate will be expressed in kilocalories (KCal). After that, the basic metabolic rate is multiplied by the activity factor and possibly a stress factor. The result of this multiplication is your actual energy requirement in kilocalories (KCal). The basic metabolic rate depends on age, gender and above all body weight. If you know what your basic metabolic rate is, you can insert a value in the program yourself.
If a day is completely empty, there is still a number indicating the number of used KCal (kilocalories red). This value represents your energy requirement (basic metabolic rate + sport) and should not be confused with the number of recommended KCal. When you have engaged in sporting activities on a day, the caloric value will be added to your energy requirement. There is no need to enter daily activities like walking stairs, riding a bicycle or walking the dog, because they are already included in the basic metabolic rate. When you have entered several days there will be a trend graphic that shows the ratio of your energy consumption and use. The closer these two lines are together, the more efficient your energy use will be.
